The Manipuri-language film “Boong,” supported by Farhan Akhtar, secured the esteemed Best Children’s & Family Film award at the 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA). Director Lakshmipriya Devi expressed her gratitude, likening the achievement to reaching an unforeseen summit. Competing with global titles like Arco, Lilo & Stitch, and Zootropolis 2, “Boong” stood out.
The official BAFTA Instagram page shared a video of Lakshmipriya Devi accepting the award, where she began with the traditional greeting “Kurumjari.” She acknowledged the journey as akin to climbing an unknown mountain, thanking the jury and BAFTA for embracing their modest film with immense affection.
Devi emphasized the film’s deep connection to Manipur, labeling it as a troubled and underrepresented region in India. She highlighted the homage “Boong” pays to Manipur, expressing a desire for peace to return to the region. Additionally, she shared hopes for internally displaced children, including the young actors in the film, to rediscover their happiness, innocence, and aspirations.
Starring Gugun Kipgen, Bala Hijam, Angom Sanamatum, and others, “Boong” premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. The film narrates a poignant tale of a young boy’s endeavor to reunite his family amidst social unrest in Manipur.
