Union Minister for Power and Housing & Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, conducted a review of power sector matters in Haryana. The state is set to commence smart metering works on the ground starting August 31, 2026. The focus is on a phased rollout of prepaid smart metering, starting with government consumers and employees, followed by high-end consumers with loads exceeding 10kW.
Officials at the meeting deliberated on the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) and discussed operational and financial aspects of distribution companies. Manohar Lal stressed the importance of treating electricity as an economic good and running utilities on sound commercial principles. He advocated for measures to lower power purchase costs, rationalize expenses, and boost revenue.
The minister highlighted the necessity of promptly settling government department dues and subsidies through an automated payment system. He advised prioritizing all loss reduction initiatives with set completion deadlines. Additionally, he assessed the state’s resource adequacy and intra-State Transmission planning, urging resolution of pending issues and ensuring capacity additions align with demand growth.
Reviewing progress under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Manohar Lal directed the state to devise a targeted action plan to expand consumer enrollment under the scheme. This move aims to alleviate consumer power costs. He expressed confidence that dedicated efforts will enhance the financial viability of State DISCOMs and make the state power sector self-sufficient. The Central government pledged ongoing support for the state’s holistic development.
Haryana’s Minister for Power, Anil Vij, affirmed the state’s commitment to executing sanctioned works and enhancing the overall performance of the state’s power sector.
