A tragic incident occurred in Ward No. 12 of Serampore Municipality in West Bengal’s Hooghly district as a manual scavenger lost his life while working inside a manhole. This unfortunate event also led to two other workers falling ill during the same operation. Local authorities and firefighters promptly responded to the situation, rescuing the workers and transporting them to Serampore Walsh Hospital.
The deceased worker, identified as Sheikh Mustafa, aged 34, was pronounced dead by hospital staff upon arrival. Meanwhile, the two other workers are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital. The incident took place during work related to the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) water project in the underground sewer at Ram-Sita Lane in Serampore.
According to police reports, the first worker fell ill inside the manhole, prompting two others to also experience health issues while attempting a rescue. A senior officer from the Chandannagar Police Commissionerate confirmed the sequence of events and the subsequent medical response at Serampore Walsh Hospital.
Serampore Municipality Chairman Giridhari Saha expressed deep sorrow over the worker’s death and highlighted the need for enhanced safety measures in such hazardous working conditions. He emphasized the importance of preventing similar accidents in the future and ensuring swift rescue operations for workers facing health emergencies during their tasks.
