At least 236 of the newly elected Members of Parliament in Bangladesh’s 13th Parliamentary election are millionaires, with nearly half of them carrying significant debt, according to Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB). The TIB study revealed that 79.46% of the MPs are millionaires, including 13 billionaires.

Among the political parties, 189 millionaires were elected from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), making up 90.87% of their MPs, while Jamaat-e-Islami saw 38 millionaires, representing 55.07% of their parliamentary strength. The data also showed that 184 MPs are millionaires based on movable assets, with a total declared value of Tk 9 crore.

Additionally, the study highlighted that around 49.83% of the current MPs are in debt, a decrease from the previous election. Notably, the total debt of the newly elected MPs reached Tk 11,356 crore, the highest among the last four parliamentary terms. The top 10 MPs with the largest debt burden are all from the BNP.
