Hubballi (Karnataka), Dec 22 – Vivekananda, the husband of Manya Patil, expressed his grief and anger over the tragic ‘honour killing’ of his seven-month pregnant wife. Manya was brutally murdered by her own father and relatives in Hubballi taluk, Karnataka, allegedly due to her inter-caste marriage. Vivekananda, who had been living peacefully with his wife, emphasized that the horrific incident should never have occurred. He vowed to ensure that the perpetrators face the consequences, demanding the death penalty for them.
“We were in love for two years. In May, we eloped. My wife had informed me about the torture she was facing from her family and her desire to marry me. Despite her willingly coming with me, a missing person complaint was filed against us. After our marriage, we provided our statements to the police and returned,” Vivekananda shared.
The tragic event unfolded when Manya’s father and others attacked her at Vivekananda’s residence, resulting in fatal injuries. While Manya succumbed to her wounds, Vivekananda’s parents sustained injuries in the assault. The police promptly arrested the accused, including Manya’s father, and initiated further investigations.
Vivekananda recounted the sequence of events leading up to the brutal attack, highlighting the threats and harassment they faced from Manya’s family despite seeking police intervention. He emphasized the need for justice, stressing that they were living peacefully as a family and had committed no wrongdoing.
Expressing her plea for justice, Vivekananda’s maternal aunt, Jayashree, condemned the heinous act and the caste-based discrimination that led to Manya’s tragic demise. The couple, belonging to different castes, had tied the knot in June, hoping for acceptance from their families. However, the deep-rooted tensions culminated in the fatal attack on Manya, leaving Vivekananda unharmed but his parents injured.
The authorities confirmed the arrest of the accused, the registration of an FIR, and ongoing investigations into the case, which unfolded in Inam Veerapura village. The police detailed the couple’s background, revealing that Manya, a Lingayat, had married Vivekananda, a Dalit, after a court marriage in Hubballi.
