At least eight individuals, including children, lost their lives in Defence Colony, Nagaland’s Mon district, due to a devastating landslide on Sunday. The landslide destroyed numerous houses, leading to a large-scale rescue effort involving multiple agencies. Rescue teams have recovered four bodies so far, with four more individuals still buried under the debris.
Around 15 houses in Defence Colony suffered severe damage from the landslide, causing extensive destruction to residential buildings and other structures. Various organizations such as the Assam Rifles, NDRF, Nagaland Police, SDRF, the Army, district administration, and local volunteers have initiated a rigorous rescue and relief operation despite challenging weather conditions.
Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has announced immediate financial assistance to the families of the deceased and injured individuals. Each deceased person’s next of kin will receive Rs 4 lakh, while every injured person will be provided with Rs 74,000. Additionally, affected families in the impacted districts will receive relief aid, including food, temporary shelter, and essential supplies.
The Nagaland government expressed deep sorrow over the tragic landslide in Mon town, offering condolences to the affected families and praying for the departed souls’ peace. The government also wished a speedy recovery to the injured individuals and assured continuous monitoring of the evolving situation caused by extreme weather conditions in Nagaland.
In addition to Mon district, severe impacts from landslides, flash floods, and road blockages have been reported in Tuli sub-division, Mokokchung district, and other areas due to heavy rainfall. Various disaster management authorities, police, and line departments are working tirelessly to conduct search and rescue operations, evacuate vulnerable residents, and restore essential services.
Authorities have urged the public to remain cautious, avoid risky areas, and cooperate with emergency response agencies. The government is committed to providing assistance to the affected families for timely relief, rehabilitation, and restoration of normalcy. Rescue operations are ongoing despite challenging terrain and adverse weather conditions, with continuous efforts to reach any trapped individuals.
