The ongoing protests in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) have brought to light a significant disparity between Pakistan’s Kashmir stance on the global stage and the ground realities. A report has pointed out that while Pakistan advocates for dignity and justice for Kashmiris internationally, it suppresses similar demands within PoK through restrictions and crackdowns. The report highlighted the stark contrast between Islamabad’s narrative abroad and its actions at home.
The report criticized Pakistan’s ruling establishment for dismissing legitimate grievances of the people in PoK as acts of terrorism. It noted that basic demands for essentials like flour, electricity, dignity, representation, and accountability are unjustly labeled as terrorism by the Pakistani security apparatus. The report emphasized that the protests in PoK are a direct result of longstanding issues such as high electricity bills, soaring wheat prices, unemployment, inflation, concerns over constitutional manipulation, and frustration over the marginalization of local voices.
According to the report, the current unrest in PoK is not isolated but is part of a broader pattern of repression seen across various regions in Pakistan. It highlighted the plight of Pashtuns and Baloch families who face suspicion and intimidation for demanding their rights. The report also criticized the shrinking space for dissent in Pakistan, where public expression is only tolerated if it aligns with official narratives.
The report underscored that Pakistan’s moral compass has shifted, portraying those resisting Islamabad’s policies as threats while glorifying those opposing external forces. It lamented the diminishing freedom of expression in the country and the increasing crackdown on dissenting voices.
