At least 13 more individuals have succumbed to measles and related symptoms in Bangladesh, bringing the total number of confirmed and suspected deaths to 512. The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reported these fatalities within a 24-hour period leading up to Saturday morning. Among the 13 deaths, one was confirmed as a measles fatality, while the other 12 individuals passed away with symptoms of the disease, as per The Daily Star.
Reports indicate a rise in confirmed deaths to 86, with suspected deaths reaching 426. Furthermore, 165 new confirmed cases have been documented, increasing the total count to 8,494 during the same timeframe. The DGHS also noted 1,967 new suspected cases in the past 24 hours, elevating the total to 62,507 cases.
Amid a worsening measles outbreak in Bangladesh, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) recently highlighted its prior warnings to the country’s interim government regarding vaccine shortages that could trigger a significant health crisis. UNICEF representative to Bangladesh, Rana Flowers, disclosed that the agency had consistently alerted health authorities through written correspondence and meetings during the tenure of the earlier interim government led by Muhammad Yunus.
