Meditation is a valuable scientific tool that experts at the Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga (MDNIY) believe can effectively handle stress and control the brain’s emotional reactions. Celebrating World Meditation Day, the experts emphasized the practical importance of meditation in today’s competitive environment.
Prof. (Dr.) Kashinath Samagandi, Director of MDNIY, pointed out that around 60-70% of stress is work-related and stressed the importance of harmonizing the body and mind through techniques outlined in the Patanjala Yogasutra. He referred to recent research indicating that chanting Om can reduce activity in the amygdala, the brain’s fear and negative emotion center, by stimulating the prefrontal cortex responsible for regulating emotional responses.
Studies using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have shown a significant decrease in amygdala activity during loud Om chanting compared to a resting state. Additionally, research from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, revealed that Yoga Nidra leads to measurable changes in brain activity linked to deep relaxation and emotional control, ultimately reducing stress and systemic inflammation.
The United Nations General Assembly designated 21 December as World Meditation Day last year, underscoring every individual’s right to optimal physical and mental health. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Ayush’s continuous endeavors to blend traditional Indian knowledge with contemporary lifestyle practices for a healthier society.
At an event, Swami Muktimayananda of the Ramakrishna Mission, New Delhi, encouraged participants to seek inner peace. He emphasized that understanding oneself and recognizing one’s true nature, grounded in love and compassion, are crucial for calming mental fluctuations. Swami Muktimayananda also highlighted the significance of following Yama and Niyama to conquer ego, jealousy, and unfulfilled desires that disrupt inner harmony.
The event included specialized meditation sessions that brought together distinguished scholars, yoga practitioners, and enthusiasts. Practical demonstrations of various meditation techniques were also featured, aimed at providing participants with effective tools to boost mental and emotional resilience.
