Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed the government’s goal of turning Shillong into India’s football capital during the launch of the 2026 football season at the Shillong Sports Association Ground. Sangma emphasized the importance of enhancing sports infrastructure and providing opportunities for young footballers in Meghalaya. He highlighted the significance of investing in players, coaches, tournaments, and leagues to foster the sport’s growth.
The Chief Minister stressed the need to focus on grassroots football and ensure that opportunities extend to even the most remote villages in the state. Sangma announced a financial aid of Rs 32 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Special Grant for the successful organization of the 2026 Shillong Sports Association football season. This support builds on the previous assistance provided by the government to the association.
The event was graced by the presence of Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, former Sports Minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, officials of the association, participating teams, and football enthusiasts. The Shillong Sports Association, established in 1916 and affiliated with over 100 clubs in Greater Shillong, plays a vital role in promoting football in Meghalaya. The association’s General Secretary expressed gratitude for the government’s continuous backing and urged support for infrastructure development at the Shillong Sports Association Stadium.
