Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has confirmed the recovery of 18 bodies of laborers from a collapsed illegal coal mine in Thangsko, East Jaintia Hills district. The incident occurred due to a dynamite blast that caused the mine collapse, trapping workers inside. Search and rescue operations are ongoing.

Sangma stated that two cabinet ministers have been assigned to oversee the situation at the accident site, located three hours away from Khliehriat. He mentioned his personal monitoring of the situation and continuous communication with district officials. The Deputy Chief Minister, responsible for the Home department, is actively coordinating rescue efforts.

The Chief Minister emphasized the seriousness with which the state government is treating the incident, mentioning the initiation of investigations and the deployment of disaster response teams. He assured that a thorough inquiry has been ordered, promising accountability and strict legal action against those responsible.
