Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the importance of collective efforts for the success of tourism in the state. He stated that a unified approach involving all stakeholders is crucial for developing Meghalaya into a globally recognized tourism destination. Sangma emphasized that individual contributions are essential for the thriving of tourism, noting the progress made in establishing a robust tourism ecosystem despite challenges.
The event, “Empowerment of Tourism Champions of Meghalaya,” organized by the state Tourism Department, brought together various groups including tourism entrepreneurs, artisans, students, community leaders, and beneficiaries from across Meghalaya. Sangma expressed the government’s vision to position Meghalaya as a preferred travel destination for tourists nationally and internationally, aiming for it to be an attractive and welcoming choice for travelers.
Sangma underlined the significance of quality infrastructure, connectivity, safety, and visitor experience in driving tourism growth. He mentioned the government’s significant investments in tourism branding, festivals, and major infrastructure projects to enhance the sector. Noteworthy projects such as the Shillong Ropeway, Mawkdok Skywalk, Rain Museum in Mawsynram, and tourism centers in various locations are currently in progress.
In a significant development, the Chief Minister announced the official commencement of runway expansion work at Shillong Airport, a project expected to be completed within 15 months to facilitate operations of larger aircraft. This initiative is anticipated to have a transformative impact on tourism in Meghalaya. Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira highlighted tourism’s pivotal role in the state’s economy, with substantial investments and numerous projects underway to boost the sector’s growth and sustainability.
