Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma highlighted the government’s efforts to boost tourism-based livelihoods and grassroots entrepreneurship during a live session from Smit village. The state aims to establish around 3,000 homestays within the next 12 to 18 months to ensure direct community benefits from tourism. Sangma engaged with locals, tourists, and entrepreneurs at Smit village, addressing concerns like garbage disposal and inadequate lighting.
Residents expressed their worries about civic issues during the Chief Minister’s visit. Sangma promised to address these concerns by involving the relevant departments. He stressed the importance of connecting with people at the grassroots level to understand their needs better. Sangma also interacted with locals at a roadside stall, discussing their experiences and aspirations.
Acknowledging the government’s support for local businesses, a homestay owner expressed gratitude for the assistance received. Sangma reiterated the government’s commitment to empowering local entrepreneurs through tourism-related initiatives. He emphasized the significance of homestays in ensuring that tourism benefits directly reach local families and communities.
Meghalaya currently has nearly 900 operational homestays, with plans to approve an additional 2,100 soon. Sangma highlighted the state’s increasing tourism potential, positioning Meghalaya as a sought-after travel destination in India. He also mentioned the Skills Meghalaya program, which has trained thousands of youth, including in tourism and hospitality sectors.
The discussion also touched upon Meghalaya hosting the 39th National Games in 2027. Sangma anticipates that the event will enhance tourism, hospitality, and local economic activities, with homestays playing a crucial role in meeting accommodation needs. This initiative is part of the CM Connect program, aiming to foster direct engagement between citizens and the government through various platforms.
