Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed concerns over the state’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) ranking in education, stating that it does not accurately portray the progress achieved. Sangma highlighted that the ranking discrepancies are primarily due to reporting gaps in schools rather than actual performance shortcomings.

He emphasized the need to enhance reporting mechanisms in educational institutions to ensure the state’s accomplishments are correctly reflected. Sangma pointed out that despite having necessary facilities and activities, schools have been losing marks in the index for basic indicators.

Sangma underscored the importance of accurate data submission, citing instances where simple measures like reporting reading spaces or cyber safety programs could have significantly boosted Meghalaya’s score. He urged school authorities and Education Department officials to ensure timely and precise data reporting to capture the state’s progress effectively.

The Chief Minister noted the government’s significant investments in the education sector, including upgrading over 2,000 schools and improving infrastructure. He highlighted the rise in the Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) pass percentage to over 95% in recent years as a testament to the positive transformation in the state’s education system.

Sangma pledged continued support for enhancing school infrastructure, connectivity, and educational opportunities across Meghalaya. The event, attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui and Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, also marked the inauguration of a Children and Adolescent Library and digital infrastructure at Sohkha Mission Village to bolster holistic educational development in the state.
