Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the crucial role of education in the state’s vision for comprehensive development. He stressed that economic progress is truly beneficial when it positively impacts all citizens. Speaking at an event in Tura, Sangma noted Meghalaya’s rapid economic growth, surpassing 15% in nominal Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP).
Investing significantly in education, youth, women, and farmers is a key focus for the government to ensure balanced and inclusive advancement across Meghalaya. Approximately 13% of the state’s budget is currently allocated to the education sector, with a strong emphasis on enhancing educational standards. Sangma emphasized the shift towards prioritizing quality over quantity in the education sector, with ongoing efforts to reform and improve the system.
In a move to provide stability and dignity to teachers, the state government announced a structured pay system for around 23,000 SSA and ad hoc teachers, involving an annual financial commitment of nearly Rs 800 crore. Sangma underlined the importance of empowering teachers for successful education reforms, citing the late Purno Agitok Sangma’s dedication to education as a foundational principle.
Expressing gratitude to a private entity for contributing Rs eight crore towards the construction of a new college building, Sangma acknowledged the company’s support for PASF-Abong Noga College. Established under the P.A. Sangma Foundation, the college commenced operations in 2022 and later obtained affiliation from North-Eastern Hill University.
