Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted the importance of governance that directly benefits ordinary citizens. He stressed that true development should focus on improving people’s lives rather than just infrastructure projects. Speaking at a felicitation event for the government’s One Time Settlement scheme for commercial vehicles, Sangma emphasized the need for tangible benefits for the people, beyond physical structures.
The Chief Minister, along with Deputy Chief Ministers Prestone Tynsong and Sniawbhalang Dhar, was honored for implementing the OTS scheme to aid commercial vehicle owners. Sangma explained that the government’s decision to waive dues amounting to Rs 850 crore to Rs 1,000 crore was aimed at supporting thousands of transport workers, prioritizing their welfare over revenue concerns.
Addressing criticism of a focus on large infrastructure projects, Sangma defended the government’s efforts to address various societal issues. He highlighted initiatives to support teachers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and introduce welfare measures benefiting citizens directly. Sangma emphasized that while infrastructure projects symbolize Meghalaya’s growth, their primary goal is to enhance the quality of life for the people.
Advocating for collective responsibility, the Chief Minister called on all stakeholders to maintain financial discipline. He assured that the government would continue to enhance governance systems, with citizens at the core of every policy decision.
