Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma highlighted that the upcoming North Eastern Council (NEC) annual meeting aims to enhance regional collaboration and assess the progress of recommendations put forth by sector-specific task forces under the Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER). The Union Home Minister is set to arrive in Shillong, with the NEC plenary session on Thursday gathering chief ministers and governors from Northeastern states.
During the meeting, discussions will revolve around reports from task forces focusing on vital sectors crucial for regional development. Various Northeastern states have been assigned leadership roles in sectors like tourism, youth affairs, and trade. Meghalaya plans to promote the Northeast as a unified tourism destination rather than individual states marketing themselves separately.
CM Sangma emphasized the goal of showcasing the Northeast as a single tourist spot to provide visitors with a seamless experience across multiple states and destinations. The meeting is anticipated to address broader developmental and policy issues concerning the region, with inputs expected from the Union Home Minister and DoNER Minister.
Moreover, the Union Health Minister is scheduled to visit Meghalaya on June 5, while the Union Finance Minister is expected to arrive in Shillong within the next 10 days. CM Sangma confirmed his attendance at the upcoming NITI Aayog meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 11. The NEC meeting holds significance as the government continues to push for enhanced regional integration, connectivity, and coordinated development efforts in the Northeastern states.
