Meghalaya Police and the Border Security Force (BSF) have refuted claims that two suspects in the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, a spokesperson for the Inqilab Mancha group, escaped from Bangladesh to India and were apprehended in the northeastern state. Meghalaya’s Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, clarified that no suspects had been captured by the state police in connection with Hadi’s murder. A senior Meghalaya police official dismissed the reports as false, emphasizing that such misinformation could disrupt peace in the region.
BSF Meghalaya Frontier Inspector General O.P. Upadhyay dismissed the allegations of any murder suspects being detained at the state’s border recently, labeling the claims as malicious propaganda. Earlier reports from Bangladesh media quoted a Dhaka Metropolitan Police official stating that the main suspects in Hadi’s murder had fled to India with the help of two Indian nationals, who were subsequently arrested by Meghalaya Police. The investigation into Hadi’s murder is reportedly nearing completion, with several arrests made and confessional statements recorded.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police official mentioned that the probe into the Hadi murder case was in its final phase, with a charge sheet expected to be filed in the next seven to ten days. While many individuals involved in the crime have been identified, some names have not been disclosed to protect the investigation’s integrity. The motive behind the killing is believed to be politically driven. The aftermath of Hadi’s death has led to unrest in various parts of Bangladesh, including Dhaka, raising concerns about safety, communal harmony, and regional stability.
