Metro Railway in Kolkata issued a warning to passengers following an incident at the Masterda Surya Sen Metro station on June 23. A woman was caught trying to cross the tracks during peak hours, prompting staff and security to intervene swiftly. The woman was safely removed from the tracks after the power to the electrified third rail was cut off.
The incident caused service disruptions as the power to the third rails had to be shut down and then restored. Metro trains in Kolkata operate using an electrified third rail that provides power to the system. This rail carries a high voltage of 750 Volts DC, making it extremely dangerous for unauthorized individuals to access the tracks.
While suicide attempts have been reported on the Kolkata Metro’s Blue Line before, this was the first known case of someone attempting to cross over to another platform. The risky maneuver involved navigating two electrified third rails, highlighting the potential dangers and disruptions such actions can cause. Passenger safety remains a top priority, and passengers are urged to use designated crossings and underpasses for platform changes within the Metro network.
