Nemesio Ruben Oseguera Cervantes, also known as “El Mencho,” Mexico’s notorious drug lord, was eliminated in a military mission, leading to widespread violence in various Mexican regions. This event has prompted cautionary alerts from India, the US, and Canada due to the ensuing unrest. While Mexico and neighboring nations find relief in his demise, Indian authorities are also pleased as it impacts the country’s drug landscape controlled mainly by the Dawood Ibrahim syndicate, with figures like Haji Salim playing significant roles.

Following the seizure of a massive drug shipment in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on November 25, 2024, by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), it was revealed that international players, including those from Mexico and China, are now involved in drug trafficking activities in India. The seized consignment, valued at Rs 6,000 crore, consisted of 6,000 kg of Methamphetamine, indicating the involvement of major drug cartels due to its substantial worth.

The Indian agencies suspect that the drug consignment seized, orchestrated by El Mencho’s Jalisco New Generation cartel from Mexico, was in collaboration with the Chinese cartel led by Tse Chi Lop, known as Chinese El Chapo. This development underscores the increasing presence of international drug syndicates in Indian waters, posing new challenges for law enforcement agencies. The elimination of El Mencho is seen as a positive step by Indian authorities to curb the influence of such international players in the country’s drug trade.

The drug cartel operated by El Mencho extends its reach through various countries, involving Chinese and Myanmarese individuals in overseeing its operations. The complexity of this transnational drug network requires a multi-pronged approach by law enforcement agencies to effectively combat this menace. The involvement of El Mencho’s cartels in India dates back to 2019, highlighting the long-standing presence of these international drug syndicates in the region and their sophisticated operations.

Indian authorities have intensified efforts against drug trafficking, particularly with the emergence of new players from China and Mexico in the illicit drug trade. The collaboration between El Mencho and Chinese El Chapo in using the Indian waters for drug trafficking activities has raised concerns about the extent of their operations in the Asia Pacific region. The death of El Mencho is expected to disrupt El Chapo’s operations, offering a significant advantage to Indian agencies in their fight against drug trafficking.
