North Bengal Development Minister Udayan Guha initiated a hunger strike in Dinhata, echoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s stance against the alleged arbitrary removal of names from West Bengal’s electoral rolls after the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Guha accused the Election Commission of India (ECI) of eliminating ordinary voters’ names under pressure from the Bharatiya Janata Party, prompting a mass hunger strike by Trinamool Congress members in Dinhata.
Guha’s protest also targets the significant number of voter names categorized as “under adjudication” due to perceived “logical discrepancies,” with over 2.37 lakh voters in Cooch Behar district affected.
Highlighting the issue, Guha criticized the Election Commission and the BJP, emphasizing the need for impartiality in the electoral process. He expressed concerns over the exclusion of common voters’ names or their placement in a pending list without clarity on resolution timelines, leading to mental distress among the affected individuals.
