The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare refuted claims of Nepal imposing a ban on the import of mangoes from India, labeling such reports as inaccurate. Nepal’s Plant Quarantine and Pesticide Management Centre clarified that there is no ban on Indian mango imports, with permits and release orders being issued upon meeting phytosanitary requirements.
Nepal has confirmed that Indian mango imports are allowed, provided they comply with specified conditions. Export permits are granted by Nepalese authorities upon meeting necessary criteria and submitting valid phytosanitary certificates from India. Despite concerns raised by reports of a halt in mango imports from India, exports to Nepal are ongoing without interruption.
Since January 2026, India has exported 149 consignments of mangoes to Nepal, totaling 2,005 metric tonnes. In June alone, 18 consignments amounting to 266 metric tonnes have been exported. Nepal has updated certain import conditions, mandating Hot Water Treatment (HWT) for mango shipments, a requirement India is adhering to for continued exports.
India has expressed reservations regarding the new phytosanitary measures introduced without prior consultation. The matter is being addressed through bilateral channels in accordance with the World Trade Organisation’s Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) Agreement and the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC). Stakeholders are advised to rely on official communications for import and export regulations and disregard unverified reports on restrictions.
