A minor fire occurred at a private hospital in Kolkata’s Salt Lake area on Tuesday. Fortunately, all patients were safely evacuated, and there were no reported casualties. The fire, believed to have started due to a short circuit in the air-conditioning of an operation theatre at Anandalok Hospital, led to the swift relocation of patients to another hospital building.
The incident, which caused no injuries or deaths, was quickly contained by the authorities. Emergency services responded promptly to the fire outside the operation theatres at Anandalok Hospital, prompting locals to alert the fire department upon seeing smoke and flames. Three fire engines arrived at the scene, although a section of the hospital’s second-floor operation theatre was already ablaze.
In a display of community support, locals joined forces with the fire brigade to combat the fire and assist in evacuating patients and oxygen cylinders. Hospital staff confirmed the safe transfer of approximately 70 to 75 patients to a different building within the hospital premises. Efforts to fully extinguish the fire continued past 11 a.m., with authorities launching an investigation into the fire’s cause.
No official statement has been released by the hospital administration regarding the incident. The extent of the damage resulting from the fire remains unknown at this time.
