Aizawl, Aug 19 (IANS) The Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Link could transform Mizoram’s economy and bring significant changes in related sectors, a study committee set up by the state government said on Wednesday.
The Impact Study Committee on the KMMTTP and the Bairabi–Sairang Railway Link submitted its final draft report to Chief Minister Lalduhoma. The 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway line, connecting Bairabi near southern Assam with Sairang near Aizawl, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Aizawl on September 13, 2025.
The railway line is proposed to be extended more than 200 km southwards to Zorinpui in southern Mizoram, near the Myanmar border. The extension is expected to connect with the KMMTTP, eventually linking Mizoram with Paletwa and Sittwe Port in Myanmar.
With the KMMTTP expected to become operational in 2027, the committee identified several areas requiring accelerated action and preparation to maximise the benefits of the two major connectivity projects.
Lalduhoma appreciated the committee members for completing the report ahead of schedule. The committee was initially given 12 months but submitted its findings within 10 months.
The meeting discussed the report’s broad findings, particularly its situational analysis and field studies. Discussions focused on the present and prospects of cross-border trade between Mizoram and Myanmar, mechanisms for revenue collection and taxation to ensure greater benefits for the state government, and measures to facilitate the export of Mizoram’s products to other parts of the country and overseas markets.
The committee observed that traders and logistics service providers in Mizoram are already benefiting from existing trade and logistics activities. It said local traders could gain further advantages by developing proficiency in Zakhai, or Burmese, to facilitate communication and business engagement across the border.
It also underlined the need to enhance public awareness about security requirements and compliance with applicable laws and regulations. On the impact of railway connectivity, the committee stressed the importance of implementing the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system effectively following the introduction of regular railway services in the state.
As part of its study, the committee visited Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland and West Bengal to examine their experiences with major connectivity projects and assess socio-economic impacts. During these visits, Mizoram’s decision to form an Impact Study Committee soon after railway connectivity arrived was considered commendable.
The committee, headed by ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) MLA T. Lalhlimpuia as chairman, with Zomuana as member secretary and other members, compiled detailed findings and recommendations covering various areas of the study.
It will continue to collaborate with the state government to follow up on the recommendations and support their implementation.
