In a pioneering move for the Northeast region, the Mizoram government, in partnership with a private company, has launched the ‘Khuarel’ mobile application. The app, which means nature in Mizo, aims to improve the real-time sharing of disaster-related information. It enables quick communication among the public, Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department, and state and District Disaster Management Authorities during emergencies.
The ‘Khuarel’ app also streamlines the recording and management of disaster data, enhancing tracking and response capabilities. Minister Lalnilawma praised the collaborative effort between the government and the private firm behind the platform, hailing it as a significant achievement for Mizoram. The state is among the first in the Northeast to implement such an advanced system, urging citizens to download and utilize the app for its user-friendly interface and practical advantages.
Commissioner and Secretary Udit Prakash Rai highlighted the app’s benefits, emphasizing that it allows the public to promptly report disasters to the authorities. The platform enables swift dissemination of crucial information by the Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Department and District Disaster Management Authorities. Expected to bolster disaster response mechanisms, the app aims to enhance coordination among districts and government departments in Mizoram.
Meanwhile, in Kohima, Nagaland Chief Secretary Sentiyanger Imchen stressed the importance of realistic assessment and enhanced inter-agency coordination in disaster response systems. During a meeting at the State Emergency Operation Centre, Imchen outlined the objectives of the Nagaland Emergency Preparedness Exercise 2026. The exercise aims to identify gaps and challenges within the current system, emphasizing the continuous refinement needed for disaster preparedness.
Imchen announced that a statewide Emergency Preparedness Exercise will be conducted to evaluate stakeholder readiness, validate procedures, and improve coordination among departments for an effective disaster response. The exercise will assess critical systems, identify weaknesses, and promote community awareness and resilience. It will involve participation from District Administrations, security forces, healthcare services, local bodies, NGOs, and church bodies across Nagaland.
