The Mizoram Ginger Unique Selling Proposition (USP) project, with a budget of Rs 189.78 crore, has been initiated under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. The project, inaugurated through a virtual event by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, aims to enhance farmers’ participation and livelihoods. Union Minister Scindia emphasized the significance of empowering farmers for the nation’s progress, highlighting the government’s consistent efforts in this regard.
The Mizoram ginger project will involve collaborative efforts among various ministries, the state government, farmers, and cooperative societies. It is designed to showcase Mizoram’s premium ginger quality in both domestic and global markets. The initiative, recognized as a Unique Selling Proposition, focuses on sustainable cultivation practices and strengthening the ginger value chain in the state.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma outlined the project’s key areas, including Sustainable Cultivation, Quality Control, Farm Mechanisation, and Post-Harvest Management. The initiative will also align with schemes from different Central ministries to maximize its impact. Noteworthy is the Gap Funding support under the North Eastern Council’s Focused Development Component for the Post-Harvest Management and Processing segment.
Mizoram has a rich tradition of ginger cultivation, with the crop being a significant cash crop in the state. Known for its exceptional quality, unique aroma, and medicinal properties, Mizoram ginger has gained recognition at both national and international levels. The project’s components, including Sustainable Cultivation and Farm Mechanisation, will collaborate with relevant departments for effective implementation.
The infrastructure development plan includes establishing a major Processing Hub in the highest ginger-producing district, Champhai. Smaller Spoke Hubs are also planned in strategic locations, aiming to involve both larger investors and local societies in the project. Infrastructure works are scheduled for completion within the year, with ginger processing activities set to commence next year.
