In a significant move against drug trafficking, Mizoram Police detained eight women and confiscated heroin worth over Rs 70 lakh in six separate operations in Champhai district within a single day. The arrests and seizures, which included 352 grams of heroin hidden in soap cases, were part of a major anti-drug initiative in the region. The individuals apprehended in the operations were identified as Lalhriatzuali, Hmangaihzuali, Lianneihmawii, Wesley Thangmawii, Lalengmawii, Lalkrosshlumawii, Lalramchhungi, and Lalthakimi.
Mizoram Police emphasized that these actions were carried out during routine checks at Champhai Khankawn Check Gate and the India-Myanmar friendship bridge at Zokhawthar. The authorities stated that the crackdown was a crucial step in their ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking along the India-Myanmar border. Additionally, another woman was arrested in a separate incident where heroin valued at over Rs 1.17 crore was seized during a vehicle inspection in Saitual district.
During the vehicle-checking operation in Saitual district, police intercepted a black Bolero Neo from Manipur and discovered 587 grams of heroin concealed in soap cases. The estimated market value of the seized contraband exceeded Rs 1.17 crore. The successful operations underscore Mizoram Police’s dedication to preventing cross-border smuggling and ensuring security in the border regions, which are particularly vulnerable due to the unfenced international border with Myanmar.
Myanmar’s Chin state has long been identified as a key transit point for smuggling narcotics and other illegal items into India through various Mizoram districts. Officials have raised concerns about Mizoram and Manipur becoming significant drug trafficking routes in Northeast India due to their porous borders with Myanmar. The authorities remain vigilant in their efforts to combat such illicit activities and maintain peace in the sensitive border areas.
