The Mizoram Police conducted coordinated operations, seizing drugs, Myanmar-origin areca nuts, and other contraband valued at around Rs 4.21 crore over two days. Nine drug peddlers and smugglers, including two Myanmar nationals, were arrested in the operations. In one instance, a significant amount of suspected dehydrated manta ray/mobula gill plates, worth Rs 2.30 crore in the black market, was found hidden in a vehicle.
Another operation led to the seizure of 1.955 kg of methamphetamine, valued at approximately Rs 1.60 crore, from a suspect in Mamit district. Heroin worth around Rs 15 lakh was also confiscated in Zokhawthar, Champhai district, with two Myanmar nationals arrested. Additionally, a truck driver was apprehended with 102 grams of suspected heroin in Assam’s Dhubri district.
Furthermore, dry areca nuts, suspected to be illegally smuggled from Myanmar, were seized from a tank lorry in Champhai. Mizoram’s vulnerability to drug trafficking is attributed to its unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh, facilitating cross-border smuggling of narcotics and contraband.
