Mizoram Police conducted two separate operations in the past 24 hours, leading to the arrest of three drug peddlers. The operations resulted in the seizure of narcotic substances valued at around Rs 2.35 crore. In the first operation, police intercepted a vehicle in Saitual district and found 71 packets of suspected opium fluid hidden inside various compartments. The contraband, weighing 45.871 kg, was seized from two residents of Jodhpur, Rajasthan, identified as Somraj (36) and Kailash (28), with an estimated market value of Rs 2.29 crore.
In another operation at the Khankawn Check Gate in Champhai district, police stopped a vehicle traveling from Champhai to Aizawl. Upon inspecting a passenger’s belongings, identified as Vanlalnghaka (36), police discovered suspected heroin concealed inside a pair of red Reebok shoes. The seized heroin, weighing 29 grams, is valued at Rs 6 lakh. Two separate cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, have been registered at Saitual and Champhai police stations. Investigations into both drug seizure cases are ongoing.
Myanmar’s Chin state has been a significant transit hub for smuggling narcotics and contraband into India through Mizoram districts. Mizoram and Manipur are increasingly becoming major drug trafficking corridors in Northeast India due to their porous borders with Myanmar. The challenging frontier has facilitated the illegal movement of goods, including narcotics, posing substantial challenges to law enforcement agencies in the region.
