In a recent crackdown on drug trafficking, Mizoram Police confiscated heroin and methamphetamine tablets valued at approximately Rs 25 crore. Seven drug peddlers, including two Myanmar nationals, were apprehended in separate operations conducted over three days. The seized contraband included heroin hidden in soap cases and methamphetamine tablets known as Yaba.
One operation led to the arrest of two Myanmar nationals with 104 grams of heroin near Tawngtaimual. Another operation intercepted a vehicle near Keifang, resulting in the recovery of heroin from a resident of Assam. The police also seized significant amounts of heroin from individuals traveling from Manipur to Aizawl in two separate instances.
In a major seizure, the Mizoram Police intercepted a truck near Tuirial bridge and found nearly 20 kg of methamphetamine tablets hidden in a specially fabricated chamber. The driver was arrested, and a handgun with ammunition was also recovered during the operation. Investigations are ongoing under relevant laws, including the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985.
Mizoram’s vulnerable borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh contribute to the region’s susceptibility to cross-border smuggling. The state shares unfenced borders with Myanmar and porous mountainous borders with Bangladesh, facilitating illegal activities like drug trafficking. Myanmar’s Chin state is a significant hub for trafficking various contraband, including drugs, arms, and wildlife, often smuggled through several districts in Mizoram.
