Mizoram has the highest cancer incidence and mortality rates in India, with Aizawl district recording 269.4 cases per one lakh men, according to health officials. Stomach and lung cancers are the most prevalent types in the state, attributed to factors like tobacco and betel nut use, dietary patterns, and genetics.
The Mizoram government recently signed a loan agreement with the Asian Development Bank for the “Mizoram Universal Healthcare Scheme.” Additionally, the World Bank-funded Mizoram Health Systems Strengthening Project is set to conclude by March 2026, with the establishment of the Mizoram State Super Speciality Cancer and Research Centre in Aizawl.
State Health and Family Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii expressed concern over Mizoram’s high cancer rates, emphasizing the impact of tobacco use, unhealthy diets, and lifestyle choices. She highlighted the prevalence of breast and cervical cancers among women in India, advocating for HPV vaccinations as a crucial preventive measure.
