The Mizoram State Election Commission has scheduled elections for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation on April 21. State Election Commissioner H. Lalthlangliana announced the election schedule, with nominations closing on March 25. The scrutiny of nominations and symbol allotment will occur on March 27, and the deadline for withdrawal of candidature is March 30.
Counting of votes is slated for April 27. The election process was delayed due to administrative reasons, including the state Assembly’s budget session and ongoing board examinations. The Mizo National Front (MNF) and Congress have named candidates for several constituencies, while the ruling Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) is yet to announce its candidates.
Over 2.39 lakh voters, including 1.26 lakh women, are eligible to vote in the civic polls across the 19 wards. In the previous AMC elections in February 2021, MNF secured 11 seats, followed by ZPM with 6 seats and Congress with 2 seats. The Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has been issued by the SEC, effective from the election announcement until the completion of the process on April 30.
During the MCC period, no recruitment or appointment processes in government departments within Aizawl Municipality can proceed without SEC approval. Transfers or postings of officials within the municipality are also restricted. Any pending transfer orders must not be executed without written permission from the SEC.
