An unruly mob in Manipur’s Senapati town attacked an Assam Rifles camp, engaging in stone-pelting, arson, and vandalism. The incident occurred during a security operation targeting armed militants. The mob damaged several Assam Rifles vehicles, including setting one ablaze and overturning two trucks.
A defense spokesman mentioned that the security operation was launched based on intelligence about armed cadres in the Makuilongdi areas. The presence of armed individuals outside designated camps, violating Ceasefire Ground Rules, was reported in social media posts. The Ceasefire Monitoring Group was informed about these violations to address security concerns.
During the operation, Assam Rifles troops faced obstruction from a large group of people, including women, as they approached Makuilongdi and Oklong villages. Despite tensions escalating, the troops exercised restraint and communicated with local representatives to ensure the operations aimed at security and peace maintenance. The situation worsened as a large crowd gathered in Senapati town, leading to further violence towards the Assam Rifles Camp.
Upholding professionalism, security forces dispersed the violent crowd using minimum force, including firing blank rounds and tear-gas grenades. The Senapati Police and CRPF were deployed to restore law and order. Despite the efforts, some vehicles were vandalized and damaged by the mob. The situation was eventually brought under control through coordinated efforts by security forces, Manipur Police, and CRPF personnel.
Efforts to maintain communal harmony have been initiated with Civil Society Organizations and District Authorities. Security Forces are dedicated to upholding peace, citizen safety, and the rule of law. The forces continue to exercise restraint and professionalism in their security and stability mandates.
