The staging of mock funerals for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Canada has raised concerns over the display of Khalistani extremist symbolism. While Canada has a vibrant Sikh diaspora and promotes multiculturalism, a recent report highlighted the troubling trend of allowing foreign separatists to incite violence on Canadian soil. The report mentioned that Khalistani extremists in Canada staged a mock funeral for PM Modi, sending a clear message that political violence against India’s leader is not only acceptable but celebrated.

Highlighting the history of the separatist movement, the report pointed out that Khalistani extremism has been linked to violent incidents in Canada, including the 1985 Air India bombing that killed 329 people. Despite acknowledging the national security threat posed by Canada-based Khalistani extremists, enforcement against them remains weak. The report emphasized that these extremists continue to operate freely in Canada, intimidating moderate Sikhs who oppose separatism.

The report also criticized the Canadian government for prioritizing electoral considerations over national security concerns, straining relations with India. It warned that allowing calls for the assassination of a foreign leader normalizes political violence and undermines Canada’s reputation on the global stage. India has consistently raised concerns about terrorism financing and propaganda, urging Canada to take action against individuals and groups supporting violence.
