A 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck Manipur’s Kamjong district and nearby regions, as well as parts of Myanmar on Tuesday morning. The National Centre for Seismology reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 62 km below the surface. Tremors were felt in Ukhrul district, Imphal, and some areas of Meghalaya, but there have been no reports of casualties or damage so far.
This recent tremor is the second earthquake to hit the northeastern region in less than a week. On April 16, a mild 3.8 magnitude earthquake affected Mizoram’s Mamit district without causing any casualties or property damage. Additionally, on April 15, earthquakes with magnitudes of 2.1 and 2.7 were recorded in Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, respectively, again without any reported harm.
Data analysis from the National Centre for Seismology reveals that the Northeastern region experiences more than one earthquake per week, mostly ranging between magnitudes 3 and 4. The mountainous northeast, consisting of eight states, is situated in one of the world’s most seismically active zones. The frequency of mild to moderate tremors in states like Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, and Meghalaya has raised concerns among authorities.
The recurring earthquakes emphasize the necessity of implementing earthquake-resistant construction practices in both public and private infrastructure to mitigate potential risks.
