Chennai, Aug 10 (IANS) Moderate rain is expected across several parts of Tamil Nadu until Independence Day, with thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in some areas, the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) in Chennai has forecast.

According to the weather department, an atmospheric circulation prevailing over the North Tamil Nadu coastal region is expected to influence weather conditions across the state over the next few days.

Under its influence, several districts are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning on Monday. Strong surface winds are also expected at isolated places, with speeds likely to reach up to 50 kmph during thunderstorms.

Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly when venturing outdoors during periods of lightning and strong winds. The spell of unsettled weather is expected to continue through the week, bringing intermittent showers to different parts of the state.

Rainfall activity is likely to be more pronounced in areas along the Western Ghats and the northern coastal districts on August 12 and 13. The forecast indicates that these regions could receive moderate rainfall as moisture-laden winds and prevailing atmospheric conditions favour the formation of rain-bearing clouds.

Other parts of Tamil Nadu could also experience scattered showers during the period, though rainfall intensity and distribution may vary from place to place.

Despite the likelihood of rain, warmer conditions are expected in parts of northern interior Tamil Nadu.

Maximum temperatures in these areas could rise by up to three degrees Celsius above normal until August 13. The combination of higher daytime temperatures and moisture could result in humid conditions, particularly during periods when rainfall activity remains subdued.

In Chennai, the weather is expected to remain partly cloudy during the day, with conditions becoming favourable for rain towards the evening or night. The city and its suburbs could experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

The latest forecast suggests that rainfall will continue intermittently across Tamil Nadu in the run-up to Independence Day on August 15. While widespread heavy rainfall has not been indicated, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds could affect normal outdoor activities in some areas.

Weather conditions are expected to vary considerably between coastal, interior and Western Ghats districts as the atmospheric circulation continues to influence the state.
