Amaravati, Aug 10 (IANS) The monsoon session of the Andhra Pradesh Legislature will begin on August 17.

Governor Justice S. Abdul Nazeer has issued the notification orders for holding the sessions of the state Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council.

According to an official release on Monday, the Legislative Assembly proceedings will begin at 9 a.m. on August 17.

State Legislative Council sessions will begin at 10 a.m. on the same day.

YSR Congress Party, the only opposition party, is likely to stay away from the Assembly session over its demand for Leader of Opposition status to its leader and former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.

The YSRCP, which lost power to the TDP-led NDA in 2024 elections, has only 11 members in the 175-member Assembly.

However, the YSRCP, which has a majority in the Legislative Council, will attend the Upper House to confront the NDA government on various issues.

Jagan Mohan Reddy has already said that there is no point in attending the Assembly session unless he is given Leader of Opposition (LoP) status.

He reiterated that unless proper status is given, there is no point in attending the Assembly session. He said the party would get adequate time to raise people’s issues only if it got the status of the main opposition.

People’s voice should be raised by the opposition party, and if they do not respect democracy, it is their lack of wisdom, he remarked.

The matter relating to LoP status is pending in the High Court.

Jagan Mohan Reddy had filed a petition in July 2024, seeking direction to the state government to designate him as the LoP.

Meanwhile, YSRCP MLC Parvathareddy Chandrasekhar Reddy said that the party will raise in the Legislative Council the issue of alleged irregularities.

The YSRCP has been organising protests across the state, demanding an immediate CBI investigation into the Mega DSC–2025 ‘scam’ and resignation of Education Minister Nara Lokesh to ensure a transparent and independent probe.

The MLC clarified that YSRCP was neither seeking cancellation of the DSC (District Selection Committee) exam nor removal of candidates already appointed, but only a comprehensive investigation into the irregularities and justice for deserving candidates.
