Morocco aims to enhance its economic partnership with India, positioning itself as a crucial gateway for Indian industries to access European and African markets. The North African country, known for its industrial prowess and phosphate supply to India, is keen on collaboration in defense, automotive, aerospace, green technologies, and logistics sectors.
The bilateral engagement between India and Morocco has escalated in recent months, with high-level interactions becoming more frequent. Last September, Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh engaged in discussions with Moroccan Secretary of State for Foreign Trade Omar Hejira in New Delhi, exploring avenues to bolster bilateral ties.
In a significant move, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh made a historic visit to Morocco, marking the first such visit by an Indian Defense Minister. During this visit, a Memorandum of Understanding on defense cooperation was signed between the two nations, focusing on areas like counter-terrorism, maritime security, cyber defense, and capacity building.
One of the key highlights of the visit was the joint inauguration of Tata Advanced Systems Limited’s defense manufacturing facility in Berrechid by Rajnath Singh and Moroccan Defense Minister Abdelatif Loudyi. This cutting-edge facility, spanning 20,000 square meters, will produce the Wheeled Armoured Platform (WhAP) 8×8, a collaborative effort between Tata Advanced Systems and India’s Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).
India and Morocco are also exploring enhanced collaboration in trade-centric sectors such as pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and advanced manufacturing. During a visit to Rabat, Rajnath Singh engaged in discussions with Morocco’s Minister of Trade Ryad Mezzour to expand economic cooperation and investment prospects.
Morocco’s evolution as a major industrial center has amplified its attractiveness to global investors. The country was recently ranked as Africa’s top industrial economy in the 2025 Africa Industrialization Index by the African Development Bank Group, solidifying its position as Africa’s largest automotive exporter and one of the world’s fastest-growing vehicle manufacturing hubs.
