The mother of the late RG Kar rape-murder victim and newly elected Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA, Ratna Debnath, expressed satisfaction with the respectful treatment she received from Kolkata Police at the State Secretariat ‘Nabanna.’ She viewed this gesture as a positive step towards achieving justice for her daughter. Debnath recounted her previous encounter during the ‘Nabanna Abhiyan’ in 2025, where she alleged being assaulted by police under the previous Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal.
During her recent visit to ‘Nabanna,’ Debnath shared that the police saluted her, took pictures with her, and even sought her blessings by touching her feet. She considered this reception a significant moment of triumph despite the sorrow in her life. Debnath expressed optimism about the ongoing pursuit of justice for her daughter and vowed to continue the fight until justice is served.
Debnath emphasized the importance of delivering justice in her daughter’s case to prevent similar incidents from occurring nationwide. She believed that imposing strict punishment on the accused could deter crimes against women, especially in cases involving influential individuals. Meanwhile, the Calcutta High Court’s Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s bench recused itself from hearing the case due to a backlog of cases, prompting discussions about forming a judicial commission to address the matter.
Reacting to the court’s decision, Ratna Debnath mentioned that the state government proposed establishing a commission to handle the case. She indicated plans to consult with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari before making a decision on forming the committee.
