The National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) has launched the ‘E-Prisons Early Release Processing Module’ to expedite the remission and premature release of eligible prisoners nationwide. Developed by the National Informatics Centre (NIC), the module aims to tackle delays in processing such cases by establishing a digital system for prompt identification and movement of proposals. This initiative, following Supreme Court directives, offers features like automatic prisoner identification, online proposal processing, real-time alerts via SMS and WhatsApp, and centralized dashboards to streamline the process.
The newly introduced module, integrated into the existing e-Prisons platform, is set to enhance coordination among prison authorities, police departments, legal services institutions, and other stakeholders involved in the remission process. Initially piloted at Central Jail, Agra, and District Jail, Lucknow, the module’s success has led to its nationwide adoption in alignment with various state and union territory policies on remission and premature release. The launch event was graced by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justice Vikram Nath, Executive Chairman of NALSA, and Justice J. K. Maheshwari, along with senior officials from the Supreme Court, NALSA, prison authorities, and NIC.
CJI Surya Kant emphasized the need for timely consideration of remission or premature release cases to avoid unnecessary delays that could compromise fairness. Justice Vikram Nath highlighted that the success of the initiative lies in reducing undue incarceration and ensuring the prompt review of eligible prisoners, rather than the sophistication of the software. The move towards technology-driven solutions in the justice system, as per NALSA, signifies a commitment to enhancing access to justice, transparency, accountability, and institutional efficiency within the criminal justice framework.
