During the Legislative Assembly’s budget discussion, NCP legislator Jayant Patil criticized the Maharashtra government’s fiscal roadmap, calling the 2026-27 budget a “document of deception.” Patil argued that the state’s goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2047 is unattainable at current growth rates, warning of a looming “liquidity crunch.” He questioned the feasibility of achieving a $5.5 trillion economy by 2047, labeling it as unrealistic due to the state’s current GDP standing at $0.55 trillion.

Patil highlighted a significant discrepancy between the government’s promises and actions, noting Maharashtra’s drop to fourth place in growth momentum among large states. He expressed concerns over the state’s escalating debt and expanding revenue deficit, emphasizing the challenges posed by the mounting financial burdens. The former Finance Minister raised alarms over the state’s soaring debt, which has surged from Rs 5.76 lakh crore to over Rs 11 lakh crore, with an annual interest payment of Rs 70,000 crore.

Pointing out discrepancies in the budget figures, Patil questioned the government’s allocation of funds and highlighted cuts in crucial sectors such as agriculture and animal husbandry. He criticized the government for failing to adequately support farmers, pointing out stagnant relief measures amidst a significant increase in state debt. Patil also raised concerns about budget cuts in health, education, and social welfare sectors, emphasizing the need for a more balanced and inclusive fiscal approach.
