NCP (SP) spokesperson Vikas Lawande faced an attack with black ink in Pune’s Mhatobachi Alandi, leading to widespread political condemnation. The incident occurred as Lawande was returning from a religious discourse around 10 a.m. A group, reportedly led by right-wing preacher Sangram Bhandare, intercepted Lawande’s vehicle, threw ink at him, manhandled him, and allegedly threatened him with a firearm before fleeing.
The confrontation seems linked to Lawande’s recent controversial remarks following an article by Sharad Pawar on “infiltrators” in the Warkari sect. Lawande had named 20 individuals, including spiritual figures, as “regressive elements.” In response, Bhandare emphasized not criticizing their gurus in a viral video. Lawande has protested at the Loni Kalbhor Police Station, demanding the culprits’ immediate arrest.
Police sources confirmed the registration of a case against Sangram Bhandare, Akshay Kanchan, and others for the attack on Lawande. The case includes charges under the Arms Act of 1959, as Lawande alleged a firearm threat. Deputy Commissioner of Police Sagar Kavade mentioned that the case registration process is ongoing, with heightened security in Alandi to prevent further clashes.
The incident has drawn condemnation from the opposition, with demands for swift government action. NCP(SP) legislator Rohit Pawar urged crackdown on the attackers and immediate police protection for Lawande. He warned of consequences if no action is taken promptly. The Maharashtra NCP(SP) chief strongly criticized actions tarnishing the Warkari sect’s name and threatened protests if no action is taken against those involved in the attack.
