The Nepali government has announced an open call for qualified Nepali citizens to apply for ambassadorial and permanent representative roles in various countries and international organizations. This marks the first time that appointments for Nepal’s ambassadors are being made through a competitive selection process. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not disclosed the specific countries for which applications are being sought.
Earlier reports indicated that positions in countries like India, China, the United States, and international organizations were open for competition. The move to introduce a competitive selection process comes amidst criticism of the traditional practice of appointing ambassadors based on political affiliations. The new government under Prime Minister Balendra Shah aims to bring transparency and meritocracy to the selection of envoys for Nepal’s foreign missions.
The eligibility criteria for applicants include being at least 35 years old, holding a bachelor’s degree, and having knowledge or experience in areas such as foreign policy, international relations, or diplomacy. Preference will be given to candidates with postgraduate degrees in relevant fields and specialized training in diplomacy or international trade. Candidates are also required to demonstrate proficiency in English, knowledge of diplomatic practices, and an understanding of international conventions.
The appointed ambassadors will serve as Nepal’s top diplomatic representatives, responsible for advancing the country’s political, economic, and strategic interests, promoting trade and investment, and enhancing Nepal’s international image. Economic diplomacy, tourism promotion, and public engagement are highlighted as key focus areas for ambassadors. The tenure for ambassadors is set at four years, with provisions for early recall if necessary. Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications by June 5, with appointments to be made in line with the Ambassador Appointment Guidelines, 2018.
