Nepal’s Foreign Minister, Shishir Khanal, explained that the Indian helicopter intercepted in Nepal’s airspace in Darchula on June 10 had strayed into Nepali territory due to adverse weather conditions. During a session of the National Assembly, Minister Khanal stated that the helicopter’s entry was not intentional or malicious, as per information received from authorities. He mentioned ongoing coordination between Nepali and Indian authorities regarding the incident.
Officials in Nepal reported a breach of their airspace when an Indian military helicopter flew into Nepali territory without permission. Anil Poudel, Chief District Officer of Darchula, confirmed the airspace violation and stated that a protest was lodged with Indian authorities. The Indian side assured that such violations would not happen again and claimed to have notified Nepali authorities beforehand.
The disputed Kalapani region, where India maintains a military presence, has been a point of contention between Nepal and India. Border disputes over regions like Kalapani, Lipulekh, and Limpiyadhura have strained bilateral relations. The incident involving the Indian helicopter highlights the ongoing challenges in resolving territorial disagreements between the two countries.
