Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has expanded his Cabinet by reappointing Sudhan Gurung as Home Minister and appointing Mahabir Pun as Minister for Science, Technology, and Innovation. President Ram Chandra Poudel administered the oath of office at a ceremony held at the presidential office. Gurung, who had previously resigned amid financial controversy, returned to his position after an inquiry committee cleared him of any irregularities.
Pun, who was elected as an independent candidate from Myagdi district, has also served as a minister in a previous interim government. Prime Minister Shah had been overseeing the Home Ministry himself for the past one and a half months following Gurung’s resignation. Gurung, a key figure in the Gen-Z movement, faced scrutiny over his business ties with Deepak Bhatta, who is currently under investigation for money-laundering charges.
Gurung announced his resignation in April to facilitate an impartial investigation into the allegations against him. He became the second Cabinet minister to step down within a month of the new government formation. An investigation committee found no direct link between Gurung and Deepak Bhatta, with Gurung explaining his wealth accumulation through legitimate means like hotel operations and investments.
When Gurung disclosed his assets, it was revealed that he was among the wealthiest Cabinet members, sparking questions about the sources of his wealth. Gurung defended his financial status on social media, emphasizing the importance of earning wealth through honest means. His investments in a micro-insurance company raised further concerns about his business dealings. Gurung, elected from the Gorkha-1 constituency, has now resumed his ministerial duties.
