Amid declining marriages and birth rates in China, a new app called Are You Dead? is addressing the issue of loneliness. Developed by Moonscape Technologies, the app allows individuals living alone to stay connected with an emergency contact by checking in daily. If a user misses two consecutive check-ins, the app automatically alerts the designated contact.
As more young people in their 20s and 30s opt for solo living in China, the app aims to combat the rising trend. In 2024, China saw a record low of 6.1 million couples getting married and 2.6 million couples filing for divorce.
The country is also experiencing a decrease in birth rates, leading to demographic challenges with a projected 200 million single-person households by 2030. The Are You Dead? app addresses the fear of dying alone, resonating with individuals in a society where social isolation is prevalent.
The app, described as a safety tool for solo dwellers, has gained popularity by tapping into the anxiety surrounding loneliness and the fear of being unattended in times of need. It offers a sense of connection and security to users, especially in the face of China’s demanding work culture and the resulting stress and isolation.
According to Ian Lü, a co-founder of Moonscape Technologies, the inspiration for the app came from discussions on Chinese social media platforms. The app’s concept of ensuring someone checks in regularly to prevent unattended deaths has struck a chord with users seeking reassurance in a society marked by long working hours and social disconnection.
Mental health experts have endorsed the app as a valuable tool to combat feelings of isolation and helplessness among individuals living alone. The app not only fosters connections but also addresses the mental health implications of social isolation prevalent in China’s urban population.
