The Indian government has named Lieutenant General N.S. Raja Subramani as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), taking over from General Anil Chauhan, whose term ends on May 30.
Lt. Gen. Raja Subramani, a highly decorated officer with over four decades of military service, will also serve as Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Military Affairs concurrently with his CDS role. The Ministry of Defence praised his extensive experience and highlighted his previous key positions within the military.
Starting his military career in 1985, Lt. Gen. Raja Subramani has held various significant roles, including Vice Chief of the Army Staff and General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Central Command. He also served as a Defence Attache in Kazakhstan and received several prestigious military awards for his service.
With academic qualifications from institutions like King’s College London and the National Defence College in New Delhi, Lt. Gen. Raja Subramani brings a blend of operational expertise and strategic knowledge to his new position as the Chief of Defence Staff.
