Following a request from Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has given the green light for a new Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) rail service to operate between the National Capital and Faridabad. MEMU trains are known for their modern electric passenger service, running at speeds of 100-110 kmph. This approval has been welcomed by the Chief Minister, who expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Railway Minister, emphasizing the relief this new service will bring to the daily commuters between Delhi and Faridabad.
The Chief Minister highlighted the significant number of individuals from Faridabad and nearby areas who travel to Delhi regularly for various purposes such as work, education, and business. She noted that the demand for improved rail connectivity has been a long-standing issue among residents and regular passengers due to overcrowding, delays, and inconvenience in the existing transport network. With the introduction of the MEMU service, commuters can expect a faster, more affordable, and accessible public transport option.
Chief Minister Gupta emphasized the collaborative efforts between the Delhi government and the Centre to address commuting challenges and enhance transport infrastructure for citizens. Projects related to transport and connectivity in Delhi and the National Capital Region are progressing under the ‘double-engine government.’ The new rail service is anticipated to not only save time for passengers but also alleviate pressure on road traffic.
A Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) is a contemporary electric passenger train service operated by Indian Railways for short- and medium-distance travel on main railway routes. Unlike traditional trains, MEMU trains do not have a separate locomotive; instead, they are powered through motor coaches, enhancing efficiency on routes with frequent stops. These services aim to enhance connectivity between cities and nearby towns rather than focusing on intra-city travel.
