Newly launched Vande Bharat Sleeper Express and Amrit Bharat Express trains received a warm reception at various stations under the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) jurisdiction. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express Train between Guwahati (Kamakhya) and Kolkata (Howrah) on January 17, marking a significant milestone in enhancing long-distance rail connectivity in the region. The introduction of these services aims to strengthen railway connectivity across the area.
At multiple stations within the NFR jurisdiction, including Moranhat, Furkating, Lumding, Jagirod, Rangiya, New Bongaigaon, Alipurduar, and New Jalpaiguri, local residents gathered in large numbers on January 17 and 18 to celebrate the inaugural runs of these trains. The arrival of the trains was marked by traditional cultural events, folk music, and dance performances, creating a festive atmosphere at the station premises. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, known for its modern amenities and enhanced safety features, received praise for offering improved overnight travel comfort.
The Amrit Bharat Express trains, designed to provide affordable and comfortable travel options, were also well-received by passengers. The enthusiastic response from the public underscores the increasing demand for better railway services in the region. Northeast Frontier Railway’s commitment to modernization and improved passenger experience is evident through the introduction of these new-generation train services. The Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, equipped with a 16-coach rake and a total passenger capacity of 823, offers various comfortable travel options across different passenger segments.
Designed with a strong focus on passenger comfort, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Express features ergonomically designed cushioned berths, advanced suspension systems for superior ride comfort, noise-reduction technology, automatic doors with vestibules, and a modern Passenger Information System. Special provisions for differently-abled passengers, contemporary toilets, and advanced disinfection technology further enhance hygiene, accessibility, and onboard comfort. Safety features, including the ‘Kavach’ automatic train protection system, emergency passenger talk-back units, and a state-of-the-art driver’s cab, ensure a secure travel experience.
The introduction of this railway service is expected to enhance connectivity between Assam and West Bengal, benefiting districts such as Kamrup Metropolitan and Bongaigaon in Assam, and Coochbehar, Jalpaiguri, Malda, Murshidabad, Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Howrah in West Bengal. This initiative will not only support regional mobility but also boost trade, tourism, and socio-economic development in the area. The launch of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Express underscores Indian Railways’ dedication to innovation, passenger-centric services, and the vision of a modern, future-ready railway network for the nation.
