A newborn girl with a rare and life-threatening congenital defect underwent successful treatment at Ahmedabad Civil Hospital. Born in Naliya town of Kutch district on May 1, the infant faced severe breathing difficulties immediately after birth. After initial treatment in local hospitals, she was transferred to Bhuj for intensive care for six days.
Due to her worsening condition, the baby was then moved to Ahmedabad Civil Hospital on May 8 and admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) under Dr. Charul Mehta’s supervision. Diagnosed with bilateral choanal atresia, a rare condition blocking both nasal passages, the baby required immediate oxygen support through an oral tube.
Doctors at the hospital performed an Endoscopic Transnasal Choanoplasty surgery on May 12 to clear the blocked nasal passage and restore normal breathing. Following the delicate procedure, the baby was closely monitored in the NICU, where she eventually recovered and is now breathing naturally without any support.
Minister of State for Health, Praful Pansheriya, praised the hospital for providing advanced treatment free of cost to economically disadvantaged patients. The successful treatment showcased the hospital’s capabilities in handling complex surgeries and highlighted the skilled medical professionals and technology available.
